Minnie's Photo Album

Minnie Johnson German's Photo Album

Minnie Johnson (1879-1946) kept a nice photo album that held cabinet cards, photos mounted on cards, typically 4.25 x 6.5 inches.

Photos include:
John and Cornelia Johnson, children and grandchildren.
Abel and Sabina German, children and grandchildren.

When I was in college, Harold D. German and I went through the album page by page, photo by photo.  He told me names of people in the photos, and how they were related, and I wrote the names and relationships on slips of paper that I slid into each frame pocket.  He knew all but a few.  For a few photos, he knew names, but had no idea how they were related.  I am attempting to find those relationships.

The photo album is more than 100 years old.  Pages in the album are bound together with brown fabric, which is beginning to fall apart, and much of the velvety texture on the outside of the album is gone.  Most photos are cabinet cards, photos mounted on cards, which were largely used from 1866 - 1900's.  It contains one small tintype, and a few small photos.  It has been well-cared for over the years and most photos are in good condition.

A few pages are missing photos, most likely removed by Minnie or her descendants and given to relatives.  I remember that it used to contain a tintype of Harold D. German and a few other tintypes, as well an ambrotype in a box-type frame about 3 inches square, all of which are now gone; only one tintype remains.  I vaguely remember Harold D. German taking the ambrotype.  Perhaps he removed other photos as well.  There were also a few duplicates which my mother may have given to one of her siblings.

About 10 odd-sized photos are lying loose in the album, between other pages or at the back.  All other photos slide into "frame-pockets."

The book was passed from Minnie German > Harold D. German > Phyllis Whited > Gay Whited.

Below are the photos in the album, in the order they appear in the album.  Identification is provided as given by Harold D. German.  Dates are from family records & Ancestry.com.

Front Cover of Minnie Johnson German's Photo Album

Pages are heavy and have this design.
Originally a piece of colored tissue paper separated each page from the next.
Most of the tissue paper is now gone.
The flowered paper covering the cardboard pages is now very fragile; some of the paper is torn.

John Johnson's Siblings
Photo taken in Wisconsin where John and Cornelia Johnson were visiting.
Names except Cornelia are probable.  Seated woman 2nd from right is definitely Cornelia Richardson Johnson.
(Back) Jonette Johnson, Eli Johnson, John Johnson
(Front) Eli's wife Martha OR a sister?, Inger Johnson Dahlen?, Cornelia Johnson, Ellen Johnson Ottum?
I believe the man with the long beard is John Johnson because he looks similar to
John Johnson in a photo taken later in life, shown on the Kansas page.
