When Clarence Johnson was about two years old, he lost his hearing as a result of "a gathering in his head and ears." At about the same time, his mother, Mary A. Ray Johnson died. His father, John Johnson, married Cornelia Richardson in 1975, and the next year moved his family to Kansas.
At an unknown age, Clarence was sent to board at the Kansas Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, now the Kansas School for the Deaf, in Olathe, KS. At that time, the school emphasized vocational training, including leather working, baking, sewing, printmaking and other trades.
It was likely there that Clarence met Mina Strange, who also had a hearing loss. They used sign language and at least one of them could read lips.
28 May 1900 Clarence married Ella Mina Strange (22 July 1878 – 6 July 1942).
My mother told the story about Clarence and Mina bringing a teacher to live in their home so their children would learn to speak.
